I Will Exalt Him ~ Exodus 15:2

  While reading through the Book of Numbers, I came across a portion of scripture that I had read many times before, but suddenly saw in a whole new way. It’s where Moses is telling God that he is not able to bear all these people alone. (Numbers 11:12-14) After all, he did not conceive them, nor did he give birth to them, and yet it seemed that God was asking him to be a father to these people who more often than not acted like a bunch of whiny kids.

  Although these verses are about Moses and the children of Israel, it wasn’t difficult to apply them to myself and my own family. I have never for a moment regretted having any of our eight children, but there are times when I do feel overwhelmed by the responsibility we’ve taken on. It’s those days when the kids are whining and complaining, and nothing satisfies them, that I can relate to what Moses said to the Lord. We can’t do it alone.

Exodus 15:2

 In searching out how Moses coped with these feelings, I kept reading: “God said unto Moses,” and “God commanded Moses,” then I would read, “Moses did all that God commanded.” Aside from striking the rock in anger, Moses always seemed to do God’s will. Not only that, but he interceded for the children of Israel when God was angry with their disobedience.

 I kept searching for something that would give me insight into how Moses managed to go on day after day. Finally, I went back to Exodus, and started reading through from the beginning. Here, I found Moses saying, “Who am I….,” as he tried to tell God he was the wrong person for the task. (I couldn't help thinking, how many times I've felt that way.) But God said, “Certainly I will be with you.” (Exodus 3:11,12)

Exodus 15:2
Then, I came to the place where God delivered the children of Israel from the Egyptians, and they sang with Moses, “The Lord is my strength and song, he is become my salvation: he is my God, and I will prepare for him a habitation; my father’s God, and I will exalt him.” (Exodus 15:2)
Here was my answer! Whenever I grow weary or overwhelmed, or irritated with my children, I need to remind myself that it doesn’t matter who I am, God is certainly with me. When I exalt Him; when I look to Him, understanding WHO HE IS, I am humbled, and I realize that I can do nothing in my own strength....HE is my salvation, HE is my God, HE is my strength and song.

When I truly grasp this, and I look to him in prayer and praise, lifting up HIS name, when I go in HIS strength, I am able to do whatever he asks of me.

And what a difference that makes to my whole outlook!

Psalm 71:16 I will go in the strength of the Lord God: I will make mention of thy righteousness, even of thine only.

Numbers 11:12,14 Have I conceived all these people? Have I begotten them, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing father beareth the sucking child….I am not able to bear all these people alone, because it is too heavy for me.

Exodus 3:11a,12 And Moses said unto God, Who am I….And he said, Certainly I will be with thee;

This is a revised version of an entry in my book.

  1. Oh, I wish I could learn this long enough to walk in it two days in succession! But no.
    I'm kind of the opposite, always thinking "Okay! I'm good at that! I'll do it!" And He is always having to stop me and remind me that, no, I need to let Him do it. It's all about Him. <3

  3. I love how you said "When I truly grasp this, . . . I am able to do whatever he asks of me." How important to do as Exodus 15:2 says and prepare for the Lord a habitation - daily staying in the Word and praying so that we can draw our strength from Him. I too am a slow learner, but thankful that we have a God who gives second chances and third and fourth and ...
